Big Arts Week Discover a new creative destination this summer

Jacqueline Alkema - Visual Artist

My work has always been concerned with the expression of human emotions , the female figure being it’s central focus. The idea for a piece of work is usually triggered by reading, research and working from life.

The use of collage has also been a feature of my work for a long time because painting techniques and layering of material enables me to create a physical and emotional depth.

Over the past couple of years I have concentrated on women’s portraiture. From the reading of biographies and archive materiaI I decided to produce a series of women’s portraits using painting and collage techniques on canvas. The work is produced in black and white for a starker more dramatic impact reminiscent of silent film and early cinema images. Text is introduced in the final stages of the work. The portraits are of women who through suffering and perseverence have achieved their creative potential and whose historical and political properties translate into cinematic story lines.

I would like to arouse curiosity in the viewer about these women’s lives and re-present their stories through a combination of image and text.

The portrait sizes range from 86cm to over a meter in height.
